Effective use of SNMP in Business Computer Networks

There is absolutely no doubt that technology is transforming our daily lives a great deal.We interact with technological devices and networks at least once in our life time. Have you ever sat back and thought about what makes it possible for you to communicate with a friend in another continent? Do you know that computer-based network communications are controlled? Ever heard of protocols? Well, probably this article might give some proper insight into this wide issue of computer networks and their usage.

Networks are bound to expand from the initial setups due to increased usage, bandwidth limitations and more so to accommodate other devices in the case of upgrades. That is the reason why business networks are perceived as being evolutionary. In order to facilitate efficient integration and communication between various network devices, the use of a protocol suite cannot be overlooked. Protocols like SNMP are just standards that manage how communication takes place within a network and how the various network components share information.

A business network needs to be controlled effectively so as to retain availability and integrity. People accessing the network have to be allowed to view and use only that kind of information which they are entitled to. There have been several cases of hacking into business internal networks and stealing of sensitive information. All organizations want to achieve certain goals in the long run mainly in terms of continuous and sustainable growth, increased profits, better service delivery and a general boost of the company reputation. In order to effectively achieve these set goals, there is need for proper network monitoring. In that case, the use the Simple Network Management Protocol becomes a critical element in monitoring complex computer networks.

SNMP mainly collects information from the various network equipments such as routers, printers, servers, hubs, routers and switches. It also plays the role of configuring the devices on an IP network. There are many IT firms around the world which depend on networks for purposes of control, monitoring and reporting through the use of SNMP protocol. The major benefit that comes with the use of SNMP is ease of administration of networks that are otherwise perceived as being very complex.

Many networking professionals relate the simple network management protocol to management of all the devices which are being used in the network. In order for the protocol to work, agent software has to be installed into the system. This agent software records all the tasks carried out by the various elements in the network for purposes of easy troubleshooting if in any case there are outages of service. There are several parameters that need to be predetermined in order to make sure that the SNMP protocol performs its functions effectively.

SNMP is also designed to issue network health signals on a real time basis so as to affect efficient troubleshooting tasks. If there are any problems noted within the network, the agent sends alerts in form of alarms, emails and SMS to the network administrators. The administrators can then use the data collected to find out if there are any problems or likelihoods of intrusion. You can also choose to integrate the use of full system automation capabilities of SNMP into the network to efficiently manage communication and the network components as well.
