A virtual server is basically a partitioned drive on a main server. We can create multiple virtual servers from a single server which would have capabilities of acting as seprate serve altogether. So many hosting companies are providing virtual servers for web hosting.
A virtual server can run a full operating system as well as be rebooted without affecting other virtual servers. The physical server is booted in normal manner , Once the boot process has been completed, a program executed which then boots all virtual servers on a machine.
Virtualization can be of two kinds, one is software virtualization and another is hardware virtualization. Software virtualization is normally using for web hosting services where in same kernel is used. In hardware virtualization, hardware resources are partitioned as per requirement. Virtual private servers are mainly using for security purpose. It also help you to install and test any software in VPS without affect main server.
