What is Rooting on Android? Why do I want to Root?

“What is rooting? Why do I want to Root?”  These are common questions that I get asked quite often. Rooting basically provides you the admin rights which allows you to gain access to the read only files which you are generally not allowed to edit. Rooting may sometimes be dangerous for your phone if not done properly. Also it can even make your phone not usable which is just becuasue of an error. lets check it out.

What is rooting?

Rooting is the process by which you regain administrative access to your phone. Android is an open source operating system but you still don’t have full “root access” to do what you want. With these rooting, you gain the ability to load custom software, install custom themes, increase performance, increase battery life, and the ability to install software that would otherwise cost extra money. Rooting is essentially “hacking” your Android device. There is no way manufactures can stop users from rooting.

What are the advantages?

You can speed up your Android device by relocating your phones cache thus allowing you to save phone memory and have a faster phone. You can replace many parts of the “Android Core” which include the ability to add new themes, edit the core apps , change the recovery & boot images etc. You can also install custom software (ROM) into your android phone. There are many great custom ROM’s available that can make your Android device look and perform entirly different.

What are the Disadvantages ?

The most notable risk is that you will void any warranty that you have on your device. Another reason for not to root your device is the potential risk of “bricking” it. “bricking” your device means screwing up your phone software so badly that your phone can no longer function properly and is pretty much as useless as a brick. Some malicious software installed in rooted android is trying to make some security issues. In this case you are putting a lot of trust into the developer’s hands.

What is your thought on rooting? Was it an easy experience? Do you recommend it to others? Share your thoughts here.
